Term 2
Welcome to Term 2 in EYFS! It is hard to believe that the children have already completed their first term at Palace Wood, but we are so proud of how well they have settled into school life and their new routines. It has been wonderful to see the children making new friends and showing their enthusiasm for learning!
This term is another busy one for us in Maple and Beech class! We will begin the term by learning about Diwali and how it is celebrated. We will be using clay to make Diya lamps and different media to create rangoli patterns. As it is the time of year when fireworks can be seen in abundance, we will be creating artwork based on fireworks and talking about how to stay safe. Throughout the year, we look at the changing seasons and how the weather and natural environment changes. Autumn is the perfect season for providing us with natural resources for us to investigate, and we will be reading stories based on autumn such as "The Leaf Thief" and "Leaf Man".
As the term progresses, our topic will be "Toys", which lends itself to plenty of learning opportunities. We will be investigating forces and exploring how toys move, as well as comparing and describing the different materials that toys are made from. As part of our learning about past and present, we will be comparing present day toys to those from the past, and looking at how the materials used have changed over time. We will be talking about our favourite toys and why they are special to us, and inviting children to ask their parents and grandparents about what their favourite toys were! We will be reading some fantastic stories based on this topic, such as "Toys in Space" and "Lost in the Toy Museum".
In maths this term we will be learning about the composition of numbers up to 5 and how these numbers can be represented in different ways. We will be comparing amounts and finding one more and one less than a given number. We will also be identifying and comparing 2D shapes and describing their properties. We will consolidate our prior learning about patterns, positional language and talking about measure.
We will continue to learn our phonics sounds and focus on using them to blend and segment words for reading and spelling. Later in the term, your child may bring home a phonics book to read to you at home, as well as their "sharing" book for you to read to them. Alongside their phonics books, children will bring home a Reading Record, for you to write any comments to inform us about their home reading. Book change will take place on a Friday. Reading records and books will be collected on a Thursday, ready for new books to be given out every Friday.
In EYFS this term, our PE day will be on a Wednesday. Please ensure children are dressed in their P.E. kits with any earrings removed.
