Starting School at Palace Wood Primary School

Starting school is a wonderful milestone, and we know it is an exciting time for both children and their families.  We also understand that beginning this new chapter can bring a few worries, so we work closely with families and pre-school settings to help every child feel happy, confident and ready to start their journey with us.

During the summer term, our Early Years team visits local nurseries and pre-schools to meet the children in their familiar surroundings.  We spend time talking with key workers to learn about each child's interests, strengths and individual needs, helping us to plan a smooth and positive transition into school.

As we get closer to September, we invite our new Reception children and their families to join us for a series of Stay and Play sessions, including Forest School.  These visits give children the opportunity to explore their new classroom, meet their teacher and teaching assistant, and begin to feel familiar with their new environment through fun and engaging activities.

We also hold a Welcome Afternoon for parents and carers, led by our Headteacher and Early Years staff.  This is an opportunity to find out more about life in Reception, learn about the first few weeks of school, meet the staff who will be working with your child, and ask any questions you may have.

Our aim is to ensure that every child feels welcomed, valued and excited to begin their learning journey at Palace Wood Primary School.
